Chapter 18

“Taking a chance can either be the best step you could ever take, or the worst fucking mistake of your life.”

Larry

My poor Nova, she was feeling the brunt of my anger. I was currently ripping apart the engine block for no reason at all. But I needed something to do with my hands so I didn’t wrap them around Ross’s scrawny neck. Not that I was jealous or anything, no I didn’t do jealous. I was… fucking annoyed. Annoyed because when I saw Ross and Elliot sitting so close together… I knew. And I hated knowing.

I was fooling myself with the thought that Elliot and I could even try to have something together. Whether that be a quick fuck in the shed, or somewhat of an attempt at doing our version of a relationship during the duration of his stay. But when I saw how perfect they looked together, I realized how stupid I was to even consider it. Ross was the complete opposite of me. Young where I was old. Handsome where I was rugged. Nice where I was a bastard. He was everything Elliot needed—and deserved. Plus, there was the biggest factor of all. He wasn’t the father of Elliot’s best friend. And considering I was working on rebuilding that relationship with Brice, getting involved with Elliot was the last thing I needed to do. Even if my dick didn’t agree with that.

I had just begun to loosen the tension assembly—a little too roughly if I was being honest—when I heard the shed door open. The way my body began to hum with awareness let me know it was Elliot without having to look up.

“What do you want?” I snapped as I moved to a cooling fan.

“We need to talk.”

“No, you need to be back inside with Ross where he can keep an eye on you.”

“I don’t want to be inside with Ross.”

I sat the tools down and finally stood up straight to face Elliot. “I don’t want you out here, Elliot. Go be with Ross.”

“I don’t want to be with Ross. I want to be with you.” Figured he’d interpret that exactly the way I’d meant for him to.

“Just get the hell out of here, Elliot.”

Elliot, the asshole, didn’t seem fazed by my harsh, and blunt, words. Instead, the fucker stepped closer to me. His eyes flashed, and a smile tugged on the corner of his lips. It was as if my rudeness spurred him on instead of pushing him away. And damn did that make me want him even more.

“Well that’s just too damn bad, Sarge. Because we have some unfinished business.”

“No, we don’t. That kiss was an epic lapse of judgment and cannot happen again.”

“I don’t think so, Larry. That kiss was hot as fuck and something that really needs to happen again.”

Elliot stepped even closer to me, only stopping once our shoes touched. Up close I could see the tiny flecks of color in his hazel eyes and smell the intoxicating scent that could only be described as Elliot.
